Tuition & Demonstrations
I offer tuition to beginners and to more advanced turners. I have been teaching for over a decade, and have the breadth of experience to offer sound, qualified advice and tuition at any level. Tuition takes place at my fully equipped workshop near Bury St.Edmunds and usually is on a one-to-one basis although two people can be comfortably accommodated if required.
The two main lathes used for teaching woodturning in my Workshop
Courses are from 1 to 5 days duration and run from 9.30am to 4.30pm and are usually held during the week although weekends can also be arranged. Courses lasting 2 or more days do not have to be taken together but can be broken into individual days if that is more convenient.
The cost is £80 per day, including lunch and materials. Protective clothing is also supplied so apart from wearing sensible shoes, you need bring nothing else with you apart from enthusiasm.
I also operate a voucher system so that a day or mores tuition can be given as a gift at no extra cost. The course date/s are often left open on these vouchers so the recipient can arrange a date to suit themselves afterwards.
I offer a unique style of demonstrating, combining skills with a strong bias towards teaching, explaining both my methods and techniques. A full range of both faceplate and spindle work projects can be demonstrated. If you would like me to demonstrate at your club or event please contact me via one the options below to discuss your requirements.
Street Forge Workshop
I am also currently involved in teaching woodturning to a group of disabled people, this taking place at Street Forge Workshops, a registered charity near Eye in Suffolk. The turning workshop was equipped with 4 lathes and turning tools through sponsorship by The Worshipful Company of Turners a few years ago and is in regular use. A lot of time is spent trying to find safe ways of using the tools and equipment when mobility and access is restricted due to severe disabilities and wheelchairs. I usually spend Thursday mornings at the Workshop so I am normally not available at my own workshop during this period.

Woodturning Projects for Classic Hand Tools
I am now writing a series of articles for Mike Hancock of Classic Hand Tools – mainly project based - so if you subscribe to his Newsletter, you can get them for free. If you don’t yet subscribe to his Newsletter, just log onto his site at www.classichandtools.com and go to the Newsletter page.
The first three articles are now on line and cover basic spindle turning, something on hollow forms and the first of the projects.
If there is anything you would like to see covered in future articles, just contact me or Mike and we’ll see what we can come up with. Your feedback would be appreciated.”
